Innovation requires a brand new way to solve things. If you keep doing the same things expecting to achieve different results, then you probably won’t get it. Why is this happening?
Sometimes, solving a complex, or unfamiliar problems, make us think hard if one kind of solution fail to materialize. Then, refusing to give up and for the sake of persistence. We try again, with the exactly same stuff. Wonder if this would bear result? No.
Iteration is totally different with stubbornness. I completely understand where people want to achieve the goal that has already been set before, trying to prove themselves, or at least feel confident that they actually could solve the problem. However, more often than not, the sunk costs of putting our heart too much on one method could result in inflexibility. Thus, paralysing ourself to not being able to see other alternatives or choices that possibly could bear more fruits. In the field of psychology, this is called functional fixedness, or there is another term called overly optimistic probability bias.
The more we have committed our thoughts, efforts, and resources on a certain approach to a problem, the more we believe that our innovative answer is the best and expecting the result from it. I found out that this thinking is actually costly for me as whenever I received a new form of task of doing that, I regarded it as a similar proportion to previously given jobs. Thus, my efficiency and effectiveness are reduced as solving a new problem requires a totally new perspective or approach, unless you could steal one or two tools from the old jobs to be used to tweak the new problems.
It is discomforting and at times might be discouraging to try a new approach over our jobs. It is completely understandable considering that we want to finish the job smoothly and avoiding any possible variances in our work. However, try to build new perspective as an alternative track, especially the uncharted waters of method, as it may not only boost your productivity but also increase your return of energy invested in the task.
